Me Generation and Millennials: Why They’re Great Social Media Hires

There’s something interesting about the ï“Me Generationï” and Millennials. While everyone else in the world is focusing on work ethic and personal relationships, they are glued to their phones, laptops and other technological devices. As you look at new hires, it could deter you, but don’t let it! In fact, in the midst of all the adjectives used to describe them, such as ï“lazyï” or ï“entitled,ï” you may come across qualities like ï“determined,ï” ï“confident,ï” and ï“digitally-savvy.ï” Do you want a determined, confident, digitally-savvy person on your public relations team You should!

A Willingness to Move

One of the great things that set these Millennials apart is their willingness to move. Their ability to use technology like no other generation before makes them more willing to move away from family and friends in order to obtain a good job. They’ll just stay in touch over Skype, Facebook and Twitter, so go ahead and pull your new hires from all over the country.

With their technological talents, the ï“Me Generationï” and Millennials are more easily able to attend conferences out of town for your company and have the information online immediately. Those other companies with Gen X-ers in their public relations departments will slowly hash out the particulars in a detailed blog post when they’re back at the office. Your new hire will have a tweet, a Facebook post and a brief blog post out there for the world to see before they even leave the event venue.

Connecting at a Faster Rate

Because the ï“Me Generationï” and Millennials have been raised and headed off into the world in a time when technology is abounding, they have a greater knowledge of how to connect through social media. Your public relations department could really benefit from their ability to connect with people all throughout the world. They thrive on ï“likesï” and comments. They are constantly checking to see if their posts were ï“shared,ï” and feedback or the lack thereof sometimes determines their moods and determination. Think this is a bad thing for your workplace Think again!

The ï“Me Generationï” and Millennials you hire need opportunities to showcase their talents. Because they’re constantly on social media, they can constantly connect with other companies, clients and professionals. Some of the responsibilities you can entrust them with include:

-Managing the company’s Twitter stream ï– Let your new hires search for articles and tweets that will pull your clients in. Millennials have a knack for knowing what headlines or phrases will catch someone else’s attention.

-Researching competitors ï– There is perhaps no other social media site more telling than Facebook. Chances are that any hires from this generation will be on Facebook anyway, whether you want them to or not. Give them permission! Ask them to research your competitors by checking out the most current posts related to or posted by them. Have them find clients and customers who have ï“likedï” your competitors’ pages so you can target them in your next advertising campaign.

-Managing the company’s blog ï– Although many individuals don’t look for blog articles by searching online, they are always coming across good content through social media. Give your new hire the opportunity to either write the blog posts each week or hire out the writing. In either case, they should be in charge of making sure they get posted and shared. This also gives them another opportunity to get on social media sites to share and promote their content.

-Training an older generation ï– Just because you have employees from another generation, doesn’t mean they can’t learn how to handle social media. Have your new Millennial put together a presentation to teach Gen X-ers and Baby Boomers how to post and share on social media sites. Pair them up with each other to work one-on-one in learning the system.

Understanding Their Motives

It’s important for you to understand the motives that the ï“Me Generationï” and Millennials have. They’re probably no different than your own! With their talents and abilities that are unlike any other generation before them, they desire success and proficiency. They want to be stable in their professions to provide for their families. Knowing these motives and keeping them in mind as you implement the skills of a Millennial can truly make your company one of the most successful in the market.
