Hiring Projections

Hiring Projections: Healthcare Heads the Pack

Healthcare related fields have been some of the fastest growing industries in terms of new job creation over the past few years. Those who are just finishing up their nursing certification or even just considering a career change will be happy to know that this is a trend that shows little sign of abating. Hiring projections from The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that healthcare jobs will continue to grow more rapidly than any other type of job through at least 2020.

However, if working in healthcare isn’t what you had planned for the future, there are plenty of other careers that are expected to exhibit strong growth. These are some of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, ones that will most likely have a wide variety of positions available for at least several years to come.

Healthcare

The healthcare field encompasses a wide variety of careers, and job seekers can expect strong growth in nearly all of them. This is especially good news because it allows you the flexibility to take advantage of strong job growth regardless of your interests or level of education and training. Home health aides and registered nurses continue to be some of the fastest growing jobs in the healthcare field. However, physical and occupational therapists, as well as medical assistants can also expect to see quite a few available jobs.

Data Science

Data science is an emerging field and a great opportunity for job seekers to enter a new industry on the ground floor. Data scientists analyze digital data from web traffic and related sources, using it to make predictions or identify trends. Both the public and private sectors are looking for data scientists to help sift through the mountains of data generated by web connectivity.

Computer Programming

Despite a recent push to make programming a core subject in schools and drive coding education, computer programming continues to experience strong job growth. While most programmers work for large companies, talented programmers can also branch out on their own and work independently. In addition to strong job growth, other benefits of working in programming include a relatively high median salary and the relatively little formal education needed to land an entry-level job.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

Skilled trades such as engineering used to be one of the hallmarks of the American job market. Interest in these fields has tapered off in the last couple of decades, which means that the jobs are in high demand. Though the require a fairly arduous apprenticeship period, electrical and mechanical engineering jobs are generally well-paid and provide a steady stream of income almost anywhere in the United States.

Accounting

Accounting jobs aren’t expanding as fast as jobs in some other industries, but they are expected to exhibit steady growth through at least 2020. The field of accounting offers a number of other advantages, including flexible hours and the ability to work independently or as part of firm. Salaries also tend to be quite high; about 10 percent of accountants can expect to earn more than $100,000 per year. Many accounting specializations can expect to experience steady growth, but fraud protection and tax accounting lead the pack.

Information Security

Information security is another relatively new field that falls under the broad umbrella of information technology. Information security involves finding new ways to protect data from hackers. Several high-profile hacking incidents have made the lack of good information security in many industries readily apparent, and the public and private sector alike are eager to hire new and qualified workers to protect their data.

Construction

The construction industry has bounced back in recent years, creating a need for everything from high-level contractors to rank-and-file builders and welders. Though many construction jobs are physically tough, most require little formal education or monetary investment. Breaking in to the industry is easy, and in urban areas there are plenty of different projects to go around.

Transportation

Another physically demanding job like construction, freight transportation and trucking is an industry that is always looking for dedicated workers. Good job growth is projected for freight drivers who work both long-haul routes and shorter routes around their local area. Pay is generally good for reliable drivers, but a clean driving record and the ability to pass a driving test is essential in order to get the job.
