Job codes are individualized sets of numbers assigned to different jobs in order to identify which class a position belongs to.
Job codes are used to assign certain positions to salary ranges, pay scales and other payroll classifications. These rankings allow for data and payroll processing and are used nationally to ensure equal salaries for equivalent positions. Job codes are used in association with job classifications and the national system of job titles. Codes and classes are predetermined, and are not specific to the individual holding the position. The federal Classification Act of 1949 regulates job codes, definitions, occupational structures and classifications.
