Much like maternity leave, paternity leave is an approved absence from work due to the birth or adoption of a child. According to the Family and Medical Leave Act, any individual who has worked for a company with more than 50 employees for one year and accumulated at least 1,250 hours on the job is eligible to receive 12 weeks of unpaid time off. Some companies provide paid time off for both mothers and fathers, a benefit which must be equally available to men and women in the workplace to avoid sexual discrimination.
