Q&A with FlexJobs Job Posting Site Manager of Employer Services Christa Hurchalla
1. How would you describe your job posting site to hiring leaders who’ve never heard of it?
FlexJobs is a niche job board that is focused on helping jobseekers find and employers fill flexible jobs. When I say “flexible” jobs, what I mean is that we specialize in telecommuting and freelance jobs, as well as in jobs with flexible schedules or part-time hours. FlexJobs specializes in roles that fall outside of the typical 9-to-5, brick-and-mortar office scenario. We focus on helping employers tell their flex work story, which in turn helps them to attract talent and fill their jobs. We also help companies to promote their employer branding, which is critical.
The jobseekers who come to our site are often well educated and highly skilled, and many have past flex work experience, which is valuable to our employers. There has been tremendous growth in the number of employees who work remotely over the last decade or so. According to the 2017 State of Telecommuting in the U.S. Employee Workforce report, released by FlexJobs and Global Workplace Analytics, there has been a 115% percent increase in telecommuting between 2005 and 2015, or 3.9 million employees in 2015, up from 1.8 million in 2005.
We know that employers are looking for this type of worker, and there’s a need for flexibility for a lot of jobseekers. Our goal is to help to connect jobseekers with legitimate employers that are looking for flexible workers.
2. What kind of employers do you primarily work with?
Our employers are very diverse. We’ve got more than 47,000 employers in our database. Those range from Fortune 100 companies to startups in all different industries. What these companies all have in common is that they are all offering jobs that fall outside the confines of that traditional onsite, 9-5 work scenario.
We help businesses that are looking to hire remote workers, and we also help employers find great freelance and part-time workers. FlexJobs caters to legitimate employers who have flexible jobs to post and a culture that embraces flex workers. Some of our more well-known partner companies include Amazon, Dell, Hilton, ADP, Intuit, UnitedHealth Group, and Salesforce.
Even in that small smattering of companies, you can see that we represent businesses in a variety of industries. While those are some of our bigger, more well-known partners, we also work with smaller companies. We like companies to be well established before we partner with them.
3. What differentiates you from other job posting sites on the web?
Our business model is pretty unique compared to other job posting sites. FlexJobs is free for employers to post jobs and source resumes, while our jobseekers pay a fee for membership. Jobseekers pay a fee for membership ($14.95 per mo. up to $49.95/year) to gain full access to vetted and legitimate professional level flexible jobs on the FlexJobs site as well as many other resources to help in their job search, like webinars, skills testing, our blog, daily job alerts, and our weekly newsletter. We are pounding the virtual pavement for them by offering these resources and by making sure that our jobseekers aren’t going to get scammed, which unfortunately happens all the time out in the flex jobs marketplace.
We work hard to verify the legitimacy of all of the companies and individual job posts on FlexJobs, with an entire team whose job it is to vet and review the companies that want to post on our site. FlexJobs fights hard against scams because, unfortunately, there are a lot of work-from-home scams out there. We make sure that all of the jobs posted on our site are legit. As a result, we have become a leader in the flexible job market over the last 10 years. As of today, we have helped more than 2.5 million jobseekers find work. We are proud of that number because it really has an impact on people’s lives to be able to work remotely or on a flexible schedule that fits their lives.
We are the only job board out there that has an annual forum focused 100% on the important business opportunities and challenges surrounding telecommuting, remote, and distributed work. It’s called the TRaD Works Forum and we host some amazing speakers and attendees from organizations of all sizes, all of which embrace remote work.
Our Top 100 list is also unique. We are the only job board that publishes this list of the top 100 companies for remote workers. It’s a fantastic resource for jobseekers who want to target the best companies for working remotely, and it’s great for the companies that make the list, too. Each year we review more than 47,000 companies to drill down to the top 100 so it’s an honor to be included in the list.
4. What are the benefits that employers get when their job appears on your platform?
An important benefit for all of our approved employers is access to the largest resume database of professional, flexible workers and unlimited Advanced Resume Search for free. This allows them to be proactive in reaching out directly to candidates who they think might be right for their jobs. We’ve made improvements to that tool every year to make it easy for recruiters and hiring managers to find the right people using this free tool. Our employers love the Advanced Resume Search functionality. Another benefit we offer employers is promotion. We showcase our employers’ flex work stories through jobs, content, media and other promotion to help them attract talent and enhance their flex employer brand.
Our technology integration is another capability that a lot of our employers really like. We have the ability to set up job feeds with employers so that they don’t have to manually post jobs on the site themselves--we do it for them. We can integrate with their ATS to pull and post their open jobs through a job feed. That kind of integration makes it really easy for them and is a huge time-saving benefit for their recruiters.
Finally, our Employer Services team is there to support all of our employers as they use the site or if they need additional help with promotions.
6. What advice would you give to employers who want their job posting to attract the best candidates possible?
Be clear. Flexibility is a great recruiting tool; so if you offer it, make it clear. A lot of companies don’t. In fact, a lot of organizations hide their flexibility when they should be calling it out. It's important to call out what kind of schedules you offer, whether it’s full-time, part-time, flexible, etc. Be as specific as possible. How much will the person be telecommuting, or will there be times when they will be required to come into the office? Will there be travel involved?
For our employers that offer remote roles, we suggest not using the phrase “work from home” because jobseekers often associate that phrase with scam jobs. Instead, we recommend using words like “remote,” “telecommute” or “home-based” to name a few. And, if a company has a formal work-from-home policy, we suggest they include a link to that in the job post. Jobseekers want to know about that.
Finally, make your job posts interesting and engaging. Be creative and make your job post an expression of your company culture. Let it shine through. We’ve had employers use humor and videos to help attract candidates and promote their culture and seen it work really well.
7. What’s one thing that hiring leaders might not know about your job posting services?
One thing that a lot of employers don’t know about FlexJobs is that we are 10 years old. We are definitely out of startup mode and just celebrated our 10-year anniversary in January. We were founded by Sara Sutton Fell, our CEO, as a 100 percent virtual company. Everyone at FlexJobs works remotely. We talk the talk and walk the walk and live our lives that way as well, which means working when and how it works best for our lives.
Sara founded the company out of her own frustration. In 2007, she was searching for a professional-level job after starting her family because she was having trouble finding jobs that were also flexible. She then realized that if she was having this problem that many other people probably were, too. That’s really how we were born. Also, hiring leaders are often surprised to learn that it’s free for employers to post jobs on FlexJobs and to source resumes using our Advanced Resume search tool. We want to encourage employers to post all their flexible jobs on the site as well as to proactively reach out to our jobseeker members who fit their criteria for their open positions. That’s a win/win for both our employer partners and our jobseeker members.
