Quality companies can never have enough qualified candidates, and employers who’ve truly mastered the art of attracting and hiring top talent know that technology can play a huge role in succeeding on these fronts.
In 2017, the technology to find candidates online continues to evolve and is subject to the changes of how candidates use the internet today. Candidates expect the ability to communicate anytime, anywhere—and accordingly, recruiters need to be accessible and ready to respond 24/7. Accordingly, recruitment apps can go a long way in facilitating this round-the-clock game of connection.
The first question for the validity of any recruitment app is: does it work? In my recruitment technology career, this approach has scaled companies. Now, I’ve talked to a number of professionals who consistently hire, and below is the curated list of their favorite free recruitment apps.
Sourcing Apps to Find Candidates Online
Cutting-edge, intuitive recruitment solution MightyRecruiter’s newly minted Chrome extension, MightySourcer, makes it fast and easy for recruiters and hiring managers to find contact information for those hard-to-reach passive candidates who are becoming more and more integral in today’s hiring landscape. The free recruitment app is also the only one of its kind that allows users to seamlessly email any candidates of interest and to add these candidates to their MightyRecruiter dashboard (if they’re current users). Sourcers can download the extension and conduct initial searches for free, but there is a small per search fee applicable to those who’d like to do more than a handful of searches.
“Our extension provides information about hundreds of millions of users across a variety of channels, including email address, phone number, and social profiles on Facebook, Twitter, GitHub, and LinkedIn,” said MightyRecruiter Product Manager Ann Barzman. “In a tight job market where fewer people are actively looking for work and employers are struggling to fill certain roles, having the ability to reach more qualified candidates quickly is critical to successful recruiting. MightySourcer can make that task substantially easier.”
Workable describes its free recruitment app as “a powerful online tool to source and manage candidates, wrapped up in an interface that teams actually like to use.” It offers a free trial, a pay-as-go plan, and then more traditional subscription packages.
“We’ve used Workable to help expand our team to over 50 employees,” said Brandon Chopp, Hiring Manager for iHeartRaves. “It’s ideal for small business, and it comes with just about everything you need to efficiently source and hire the top candidates. It’s a very cost effective recruiting software that provides affordable plans without taking away a ton of features. I really like it because it charges you based on how many users you have rather than how many features you’re using. Workable has helped us stay organized with the whole hiring process, including posting job ads, receiving and reviewing applications, administering interviews, the on-boarding process, and a lot more. Their reporting and analytics are also very helpful, allowing us to figure out what is working and what is not.”
Social Media Apps to Find Candidates Online
Social media changed the way most people communicate, and few business functions were as affected by the advent of Facebook, Twitter, etc. as much as talent acquisition. Recruiters have more ways than ever to find candidates.
“Our favourite free recruitment appss to use for our hiring are those on social media,” said Emma Hunt, Head of Talent Acquisition at Logojoy. “Social media can be used for many things from brand to effectively reaching an audience you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. It’s been effective for our hiring as the type of people we look for actively engage in communities on social sites like Twitter, Facebook, Github etc. There are many startup and technology job groups that have been welcoming to us. We are able to not only post our current job openings, but they also enable us with the ability to interact with interested individuals and share things about our company beyond just the job posting.”
Meeting candidates in groups across different social media sites is a must. Now, let’s dive into more intricacies of finding candidates online on each respective social media platform.
While Facebook owns WhatsApp, they are separate products. In terms of being utilized as free recruitment apps, they fit together very well. Facebook serves as a great sourcing tool and WhatsApp complements it as a less intrusive candidate communication tool.
“In an effort to recruit more personnel, we run recruitment campaigns through Facebook – not by sponsoring the post but simply by allowing referrals and word of mouth to bring candidates to us,” said Daniele Gatti, CEO of Velvet Media USA, a digital and social media marketing agency with offices in five countries.
“Then, the candidates have to submit their CV and a video proposal via Whatsapp. The platform is free both to us and to the candidates. The initiative is incredibly successful! We will definitely use it again in the future.”
LinkedIn is kind of like the elephant in the tech recruitment universe. As long as it remains #1 for the professional profile, it will always have recruitment value.
“I’ve hired a lot of people over the years, from short-term freelancers to long-term, in-house staff,” said Simon Slade CEO and Co-founder of SaleHoo. “LinkedIn has been a very effective tool for finding quality employees. We take a proactive approach and use the tool to find and chat with potential staff. We are always looking to expand the team with great talent, and LinkedIn has been an awesome resource for finding that talent.”
“Since we are an organization focused 100% on headhunting top sales executives, we don’t rely on traditional recruiting tactics like posting job ads,” said Taylor Dumouchel, Marketing and Communications Specialist at Peak Sales Recruiting. “Along with many tools and our massive database of assessed sales candidates, one of our favourite free recruitment technologies is LinkedIn. In order to headhunt through LinkedIn, recruiters should create an ideal candidate profile that details specific must-have skills and experience in order to fill the role and from that choose 2-4 important keywords to search for in candidate social profiles. Using those keywords, recruiters can then conduct searches on social networks and compile a list of social profiles which can then be evaluated against the role’s criteria. Finally, recruiters can contact the candidates that are deemed a good fit for the role via the social networks.”
Twitter wants to be the pulse of what’s happening. Unlike Facebook and LinkedIn, it is much more open: the vast majority of status updates are public and many profiles openly receive direct messages.
“My favorite free recruitment app is Twitter,” said James Kemper, President W.H. Meanor & Associates Cage. “All the others keep charging more to do less. I even pay for Hootsuite (they do offer a free limited plan as well), but I find Twitter does as good a job as the others in driving traffic to website or other mediums I’m using. If you’re looking for best bang for buck than for me it’s Hootsuite as I don’t’ need the paid Linkedin versions or Facebook ads as with a low cost monthly I can schedule everything I want to everyone at once.”
Better Tracking Apps to Find Candidates Online
“Here at Peak, we are avid users of Bitly,” said Taylor Dumouchel, Marketing and Communications Specialist at Peak Sales Recruiting. “Our marketing team initially introduced us to it and we now use it to help enhance our recruiting strategy. We understand the importance of nurturing top talent and maintaining a database of engaged top candidates. Our headhunters speak with hundreds of top sales talent on a daily basis who are either participating in our recruitment process or simply networking with our recruiters. As a result, Peak has maintained a database of hundreds of thousands of top sales professionals. It is a top priority for us to keep this pool of top talent engaged with the Peak brand so that when the right fit comes along, we can match that A-player with our client.
“To keep our prospective candidates engaged, we conduct surveys, distribute resources, share marketing content, and much more. Since we don’t like to make any guesses as to what our candidates like to read and when they’d like to receive it, we use Bitly to measure each resource and communication performance. Using the insights from Bitly, we’re able to develop a deeper understanding of our candidates’ behavior and gain insight into how to strategically maintain that relationship. For instance, we’ll often use Bitlinks to see how specific content performs against certain demographics such as geographic region and title, which allows us to then even further personalize content and increase engagement rates. In addition, we learn what time and day is best to communicate with these prospective candidates — again helping us increase the likelihood of a response or a click. This kind of insight is extremely valuable in keeping our database of top talent warm and engaged.”
